TURLOCK SHOWHOUSE: PRIMARY BEDROOM

After creating five Christopher Kennedy Compound showhouses in Palm Springs for Modernism Week, in 2019 I was lured to Turlock, California by a homeowner looking to create an exciting interiors experience in a classic American town. ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME served as our national media sponsor and published the project and published the project on the pages of its beautiful magazine.

For the design of the primary bedroom suite, I turned Justine Macfee of the powerhouse San Franciso-based firm Macfee Interior Design, which is led by Justine and her mother, Catherine. Justine and Catherine created a show-stopping, chic, enveloping space.

When Justine told me that her concept was Diane Keaton at the Ranch...I knew this was going to be good!

ASPIRE and I sat down with Justine to discuss her incredible space.

CK: When you told me that your concept was Diane Keaton at the Ranch, honestly, I got goosebumps. And then your space was even better than I could have imagined. What does that concept mean to you? Justine: Bold black and white elements meet a fun splash of color. Old-world antiques meet fun contemporary textiles and fixtures.

CK: Did you step out of your comfort zone for this project, and if so, why? Justine: I was part designing for myself, part for the overall objective of the show house space, so that was a tricky budget balance.

Above: Justine incorporated antiques into a space that feels curated, cohesive, and totally current.

Above and Below: The show-stopping, floor-to-ceiling bed, was custom created by Macfee Design and is dressed in fabric by Schumacher.

To unify an asymmetrical room with a pitched ceiling, Justine painted everything in a rich blue by Dunn-Edwards Paints.

CK: What did you and your team accomplish that you thought would not happen in time?

Justine: With help from Hugomento in San Francisco, I was able to curate an amazing collection of artwork for the space – which of course for a normal client and circumstance, would take some time to gather/collect, but with Hugo’s help I was able to curate a really fun collection.
