A Talk with Tai Schaffler, Founder of Bandhini Design Australia

I am a fan, follower and collector of all things Bandhini, so you can imagine my excitement when I had a chance to interview my design crush, Tai Schaffler. For 20 years, Tai has brought the international flair of her life’s journey into our homes with luxurious designer pillows.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Tai Schaffler, Founder and Designer ofBandhini Design Australia.

1.) CK: If we turn back time, to say, 30 years ago, did you envision yourself where you are today?

Tai Schaffler: No, I thought I was going to be an international journalist doing something to help humanity, but it has manifest I help craftsmen from the third world deliver a beautiful product.

2.) CK: Lets talk about your pillows. You combine texture and color to create gorgeous pillows. Tell me about the design elements in your pieces.

Tai Schaffler: My obsession with ancient cultures has never left me – so big influences there and living in the country, nature plays an enormous role. I have put sticks, stones and shells on cushions for years. Our collections are always intricately layered- I think people remember us for that and detail. Put it this way, in 20 years I’ve never heard a soul say they don’t like it. We have Bandhini collectors with vintage pieces that they adore to this day.

3.) CK: Your designs have a global look, but at the same time they are quintessentially modern. How do you do that?

Tai Schaffler: I apply a western aesthetic to the beautiful abilities of Indian craftsmen. This results in a timeless and luxurious look.

4.) CK: I’m going to classify your product as luxury. As Coco Chanel once said “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” How do you combine style and comfort in designing your products?

Tai Schaffler: Quality is our integrity. We support the local cottage industry, which is better than fair-trade its equal trade. Bandhini is handmade, French-seamed and finished under the highest of standards. We use natural fibers – apart from rayon, which is derived from tree bark, and as a finishing touch, we add a feather inner, the result is a comfortable and visually appealing look – also known as luxury.

5.) CK: Your products fit into so many rooms, but lets focus on the bedroom. Do you have any tips for my followers on how to design the perfect bed dressing?

Tai Schaffler: It’s all about layering; keep it comfortable — somewhere you look forward to going to every night.

6.) CK: What’s next for you and Bandhini?

Tai Schaffler: We celebrate our 20th anniversary! This celebration includes 20-years of work in the spotlight and I will travel to Australia to showcase our new collection. We also have some markets opening in the states – and there will be another agent joining the force in the USA!

Here are three Bandhini pillows in my pied-à-terre in West Hollywood, CA.
