Designers are artists — we bring life to ideas that would never come to fruition without our touch, passion or perspective; every space is like a canvas where we create livable art. But how do we get there? How do we approach our profession with the courage to think outside the box? I can’t speak for all designers — but I thrive on the three “I’s”: imagination, instinct and inner peace. Yes, I do hold a bachelor of architecture and MBA degrees from Drury University, but I believe in life-long learning. With that said, the following are three affirmations I think every designer should know:
1.) I can and will adapt to all circumstances with joy : Every day greets us with a new lesson and in some cases a challenge. Just today, I showed up to a client’s house in Beverly Hills, where movers had dropped the contents of three homes into one new home — and I had to figure out where everything would go! Whenever I face a new opportunity or a difficult decision I take a deep breath and calmly look for new ways to achieve my goal. Life is full of surprises, but I choose to enjoy my journey to get the most out of each day.
2.) My mind is a powerful force and I can unlock every corridor : In “Unlocking the Power of a Vision Board,” I wrote about my personal appreciation for the power to visualize opportunity. If you have not created one, I strongly encourage you to do so. A vision board is a creative way to express your gratitude and openness to the opportunities on the horizon
3.) I design rooms, furniture, and things that can positively affect lives : It is extremely important to remember who and why you design. Your clients and the lives they lead must rest at the center of your design — after all, it is their home, business or office space — it must be custom and comfortable to “knock their socks off!”
